S. Fox German Bore Bb clarinet

This was my everyday Bb clarinet for a couple of years, following which it has seen limited use in performance and recording (it appears on the latest Riverdale Ensemble CD) and as a demonstrator.

The body is grenadilla with Delrin/carbon fibre joint rings, and the keywork is silver plated.  It is normal Boehm system (not Reform Boehm), with the addition of the S. Fox automatic register/Bb mechanism (current design, recently retrofitted) and low E correction key (operated by the right thumb).

All pads and corks are new.  It can be supplied without a case, or with a new case of the customer's choice.

Boosey & Hawkes Imperial 926 Eb clarinet

Serial number 41xx49 (1978)

This was my own Eb clarinet through university and early professional years, during which it received a number of keywork enhancements and considerable other work to optimise the intonation; since then it has seen little use.  The high original quality of the clarinet plus the subsequent improvements make it probably the most in-tune French-style Eb clarinet to be found anywhere.  It has a sweet tone with plenty of carrying power.

The modifications consist of -

- repositioned register hole and new register tube
- altissimo vent mechanism (operating off the L1 ring)
- low A vent key
- raised throat G# key

The body is grenadilla, and the keywork is silver plated (mostly original, with recent replating as necessary).  The small pads are cork and have years of life left; the key corks and large pads will be replaced prior to sale.  It has been set up to use conventional French style mouthpieces, though the original B & H mouthpiece is included.  It comes with an S. Fox body extension section (Delrin), three barrels (two original B & H, one shortened, and one S. Fox Delrin) and the original one-piece case, which is well used but still works fine.

Selmer 10S/S. Fox Bb clarinet
(photos to come)

Serial number Z9477 (1979)

This was my own Bb clarinet through university and early professional years, following which it has been used as a testbed for keywork alterations and enhancements.  The result is a truly unique instrument, with enhanced technical flexibility but retaining the excellent basic playing qualities of the original.

The modifications include -

- S. Fox automatic register/Bb mechanism (current design, recently retrofitted)
- plateau key for L thumb
- 5th trill key (i.e., separate trill keys for Bb, B natural and C)
- L1 "bis" key (fixed)
- R1 C#/G# touchpiece (fixed)
- articulated C#/G# (using original tone hole position, with rocker on centre joint ring)
- B/F# vent key
- LH Ab/Eb lever
- low F correction key (operated by the R thumb)

The keywork has all been newly silver plated, and the pads and corks are new.  It comes with two barrels (original Selmer and S. Fox Delrin) and the original large single Selmer case.  The interior of the case has been modified to accept a pair of clarinets, and has screw sockets for stand pegs.

Maino & Orsi Albert/simple system bass clarinet

The manufacturing date and history of this instrument are unknown, other than that it dates from the early 20th century.  It is potentially very usable, playing well in tune at A440, and it would be a major asset for a klezmer player or a serious proponent of period instrument orchestral performance.  The fingering is standard Albert/simple system, with a range to low E natural, and with separate, manual register keys.

The body (grenadilla) is in undamaged except for one short hairline crack in the upper joint, which has been unobtrusively repaired.  The keywork, bell and neck are unplated nickel silver.  A full overhaul, including polishing of all metal parts and addressing of all repair issues, will be carried out prior to sale.  It is fully compatible with modern French style mouthpieces, but the original wooden mouthpiece is still present.  The original case has disappeared, but one can be supplied, as per the customer's preference.

Holton Beaufort Albert/simple system Bb clarinet

The manufacturing date and history of this instrument are unknown, other than that the Beaufort name was given to instruments imported from France by the Holton company in the early 20th century.  It is a nice, very usable Albert/simple system clarinet, playing well in tune at Low Pitch, and it would be ideal for klezmer music.

The body is ebonite (a major plus for a clarinet of this age, since it eliminates concerns about cracking, bore shrinkage, loose posts, chipped tone holes or damaged tenons), and is in perfect condition.  The keywork is unplated nickel silver.  A full overhaul, including polishing of all metal parts, will be carried out prior to sale.  The original case is included.

Selmer Super Action 80 alto sax

Serial number N324828 (1980)

This has been my personal alto sax since it was a couple of years old, until last year (at which point I switched to a vintage Buescher).

It is in excellent condition, with 98% lacquer (just a few small areas on the key rods are starting to wear through) and only one small previous dent near the octave mechanism (suffered while with the first owner; a photo is shown above).  Most of the pads (with Selmer domed metal resonators) are original, still with life in them; the pads on the octave keys, palm keys and high E and F# keys are Valentinos (which will probably outlive the rest of the sax!).  The original case is also excellent, with only very minor scuffing on the binding.

Buffet S1 tenor sax

Serial number 26105 (1977)

A pristine example of a legendary design (see www.saxgourmet.com/VINTAGE_SAXOPHONE_VALUE_GUIDE.htm), this has been my personal tenor sax from new until this year (at which point I acquired a vintage Buescher), and has seen only occasional use over the years (mostly limited to performances of Bolero, Lieutenant Kije, Romeo & Juliet and other orchestral repertoire).

It is in 99% perfect condition, with 100% lacquer and only one small, smooth and now-repaired dent on the lower body (a photo is shown above).  The pads (with flat metal resonators) are mostly original and virtually as new, though the high F pad has been replaced a few times.  The original case is in very good condition, with just one blemish in the covering which was there when purchased.

Moeck/Steinkopf C "soprano" chalumeau

This is a brand new, unused instrument, imported direct from Germany for an order which was then cancelled (we live and learn!).  According the Moeck/Steinkopf nomenclature it is a soprano, though it is an alto in the terminology more generally used; the lowest note is concert C.  Pitched at A440, it is a reasonably faithful adaptation of an original specimen, except for the mouthpiece which is pragmatically more modern in style.  The material is pearwood.  Further information is available at www.moeck.com.  It is priced to sell, at the actual landed wholesale cost.

Price:  Can. $495

Selmer Traypak alto sax case

Dating from the 1960's, this is the style with the integral (not removable) clarinet compartment, plus clips inside the lid for holding a flute case.  It is in very good condition, with only a few inches of missing stitching and some scuffing on the binding preventing it from being pristine; most crucially, the zipper is intact and fully functional.  It may be heavier than modern cases, but it provides superior protection, and is a compact package for a doubler.
